This book begins with the civil wars and end with the Restoration –it is the story of Quakers in the wider world, and how they survived and thrived despite the much larger political and religious conflicts taking place around them.
It examines the origins of Quakerism, examine the contentious leadership battle between George Fox and James Nayler, as well as re-examines the activities of the earliest followers. It also explores the dissemination of ideas during this nascent phase of Quakerism and the impact itinerant preaching and the printing press had on communities throughout England, Scotland, and Wales.
